If you live or work in Shillington and have considered LASIK eye surgery, it is important to know that there are several different types of laser eye surgery available. Each uses different technology and techniques. Which one is right for you? At Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania, we will assess your vision and recommend the perfect technique to meet your unique needs.
Bladeless LASIK
Our surgeons prefer the bladeless LASIK eye surgery technique. It is more technologically advanced and is a common alternative to traditional LASIK which uses a metal surgical blade. There are several key differences between traditional LASIK and bladeless LASIK, also called all-laser LASIK. Let’s take a closer look.
All LASIK procedures involve creation of a corneal flap. This flap is folded back to expose the cornea for vision correction. Bladeless LASIK uses a laser called a femtosecond laser to create the flap, instead of the traditional surgical metal blade called a microkeratome.
Once the cornea is exposed, the surgeon uses a second laser called an excimer laser to reshape the cornea to correct vision. Each person’s eye is unique and different, so prior to the surgery, we create a customized map of your cornea that guides the excimer laser during vision correction. This form of LASIK can be used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and even astigmatism. For example, with astigmatism, the eye has both hills and valleys on the corneal surface, explaining why people with astigmatism have blurry vision at both near and far distances. The corneal map traces all of these distortions and guides the laser during the surgery.
What to Expect
Your journey begins with an initial consultation at one of our convenient Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania locations. We will discuss your vision correction needs, evaluate you and your vision, and discuss your options for laser eye surgery. The large majority of patients are good candidates for bladeless LASIK.
You will have one more pre-operative visit, at which we will create the customized map of your eye or eyes. We can correct both eyes during the same surgery.
On surgery day, there is a brief preparation for surgery, followed by a very fast and safe bladeless LASIK surgery; most are performed in under one hour. After surgery, there is a brief recovery period, and we want to monitor you to make sure you are recovering nicely. Bladeless LASIK is an outpatient procedure, so after we clear you to leave our facility, you can go home the same day and rest your eyes.
We schedule a couple of follow-up visits to check on your progress. Healing with bladeless LASIK is fast and your vision quickly stabilizes. Most patients are astounded when they can see clearly the very next day. Because this technique does not use a surgical blade, risk of infection is greatly reduced.
You will be able to resume normal activities within a few days, and the corneal flap takes about three months to completely heal. We will schedule visits during this time to check your progress.
