Refractive Error
LASIK is a surgery that corrects refractive error, which is a measurement of visual acuity. A refractive score of 20/20 indicates perfect vision, and any other score 20/30 or above indicates a refractive error. Refractive error is usually caused by a problem in the distance at which images are focused on the retina, so a person ends up having nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism.
LASIK surgery is one of several types of refractive surgery that corrects vision or refractive area. All of these techniques involve reshaping of the cornea. For myopia, the corneal curvature is flattened to correct vision; for hyperopia, the curvature is increased. To correct astigmatism, the surgeon reshapes the cornea at different points according to a customized map of the eye that is made prior to surgery. Refractive surgeries are safe and simple surgeries and provide a great vision alternative to contact lenses or eyeglasses.
Is LASIK safe?
Our surgeons use the state-of-the-art bladeless LASIK procedure, which is extremely safe and effective. LASIK is actually one of the safest surgeries performed. Patients rarely have serious complications. Dry eye is a common issue, but it only lasts a few days while the eyes heal, and we can prescribe eye drops to help.
Who can have LASIK?
Most adults are candidates for LASIK. The eyes stabilize after age 18, so we don’t perform LASIK on anyone younger than this age. Furthermore, your eyes must be stable, so we require our patients to have a steady, unchanged eyeglasses or contact prescription for at least a year.
For a variety of reasons, some patients are not good LASIK candidates, but we can talk to you about other surgical and non-surgical vision correction options when you come in for your initial consultation. Our professional team performs a thorough eye exam including a corneal exam, and we assess your medical history. During the initial consultation, we will discuss your expectations for the procedure and the results of these examinations.
What results can I expect?
Most patients have 20/40 vision after LASIK, and many no longer need to wear eyeglasses. Our patients are thrilled with their post-surgery results and often tell us they wish they hadn’t waited so long to have the procedure. LASIK technology has greatly evolved in the last few years, and we can now correct very high refractive errors with LASIK, such as myopia of -12 diopters (-12D), hyperopia of +6D, and astigmatism of 5D. Patients with high levels of refractive error correction may experience more post-operative symptoms, but we will help you through that.
Our patients are thrilled with their LASIK results and They are so pleased that they often refer family and friends who have been considering LASIK. If you are in Reading PA, come see our surgeons at Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania in Blandon. We can’t wait for you to be our next LASIK success story.
