Tell me more about cataracts
Cataracts are a natural progression of aging, and are very common. In fact, more than three million cases of cataracts occur each year in the US. People more likely to develop them are over 60 and female. A family history of cataracts may increase your likelihood of developing them.
Some people begin forming cataracts in their forties. At first, people don’t usually notice any vision issues, but over time, your vision can become cloudy. It may appear as if you are looking through a waterfall or a dirty window, and colors may appear more muted or dull.
How are cataracts treated?
True repair of cataracts can only be achieved by surgery, but you may not need the procedure right away. Our excellent eye doctors may be able to simply adjust your contact lenses or eyeglasses prescription. When our patients begin to have significant vision interference, we recommend surgery. Many of our patients who delay surgery when vision becomes severely impacted unfortunately have accidents like trips and falls.
Cataracts are easily treated by an eye surgeon. If not treated, cataracts can result in significant vision impairment, but there is no reason to delay treatment. Cataract surgery is a very safe and effective surgery. We perform this procedure on an outpatient basis in our state-of-the-art eye centers.
During the short procedure, the surgeon will remove the clouded lens that contains the cataract. We will perform surgery on one eye at a time; when the first eye heals, we will perform the procedure on your other eye. After removal of the clouded lens, the surgeon will replace it with a clear artificial lens, and can even provide a lens with vision correction capabilities.
Prior to surgery, our team will conduct an eye evaluation and series of tests and measurements to ensure you are a good candidate for the surgery. The surgeon uses these tests to guide not only the surgery, but also discussions with you regarding your expectations as a patient.
