What is the procedure like?
We perform a very technologically advanced form of LASIK called bladeless custom LASIK vision correction. It is considered the safest and most advanced form of LASIK surgery and is the only procedure that NASA and the Air Force will use.
Bladeless LASIK is “all-laser” LASIK, using two safe and effective laser technologies for vision correction. Surgeons first use a femtosecond laser designed to create a corneal flap, then follow with an excimer laser to reshape the cornea to correct vision. Think of your cornea as a fingerprint. Each eye is unique, so our surgeons create a customized corneal map that guides the surgeon’s use of the excimer laser during the LASIK procedure.
We prefer the technologically advanced bladeless Custom LASIK procedure over the older LASIK technique that uses a metal surgical blade. There is a reduced risk with the bladeless technique because no metal blade ever touches the eye’s surface. Using the laser technique, surgeons can create a much thinner corneal flap, meaning the surgeon has more ability to correct higher refractive error. Healing is also easier, and the surgeon can treat both eyes in the same procedure.
Safe. Quick. Painless. All of these words describe bladeless Custom LASIK. The surgery only takes about 30 minutes. After someone drives you home, we ask that you rest your eyes for the remainder of the day. Most patients simply sleep for a few hours after the procedure. At first, you make experience some minor eye irritation, such as itchiness or dry eye, but we send you home with drops that help with those symptoms.
Two days after your surgery, you’ll come in for a follow-up visit in which the surgeon will check your healing progress.
Am I A Candidate?
Most patients are indeed good surgical candidates for LASIK. At your initial consultation, our professional staff will perform a comprehensive eye evaluation. We will take measurements such as pupil size, corneal thickness and refractive error to help us decide whether LASIK is right for you. If for some reason you are not a good LASIK candidate, our surgeons will offer an explanation and will discuss alternative options for vision correction.
